Public consultation on proposed amendments to the Poisons Standard - ACCS & Joint ACMS-ACCS, MARCH 2025

We asked

From 17 January 2025 to 17 February 2025, we sought submissions from the public on scheduling proposals referred to the March 2025 meetings of the Advisory Committees on Medicines and Chemicals Scheduling. Respondents were given the choice to indicate their support or opposition to the proposed amendments using survey buttons, with or without a written response. 

You said

We received a total of 26 submissions in response to the pre-meeting public notice for March 2025. The breakdown of the responses has been provided below:  

POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE AND SODIUM HYDROXIDE: A total of 26 votes were received for potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide, 16 in full support, 2 in partial support and 8 in opposition of the proposal. Of these submissions, 22 provided a written response, 12 written responses in support, 2 written responses in partial support and 8 in opposition.  

METHYL ETHYL KETONE OXIME (MEKO): A total of 8 votes were received for methyl ethyl ketone oxime, 5 in full support, 3 in partial support of the proposal and no votes were received in opposition of the proposal. Of these submissions, 5 provided a written response, 2 written responses in support and 3 written responses in partial support.

CYANOACRYLATE ESTERS:  A total of 11 votes were received for cyanoacrylate esters, 6 in full support, 2 in partial support and 3 in opposition of the proposal. Of these submissions, 7 provided a written response, 2 written responses in support, 2 written responses in partial support and 3 written responses in opposition.  

ACRYLATES AND METHACRYLATES BASED ON BISPHENOL A (BPA): A total of 6 votes were received for acrylates and methacrylates based on bisphenol A (BPA), all 6 were in full support, with no votes received in partial support or in opposition of the proposal. Of these submissions, 2 provided a written response in support.

MEDIUM AND LONG CHAIN ALKYL SULFATES: A total of 9 votes were received for medium and long chain alkyl sulfates, 7 in full support, no votes in partial support and 2 in opposition of the proposal. Of these submissions, 3 provided a written response, 1 written response in support and 2 written responses in opposition. 

CHROMIUM-DL-METHIONINE (Chromium organic chelates): A total of 6 votes were received for Chromium-DL-methionine, 4 in full support, 1 in partial support and 1 in opposition of the proposal. Of these submissions, 3 provided a written response, 1 written response in support, 1 written response in partial support and 1 written response in opposition.

The Delegate considered all submissions prior to making an interim decision on these proposals. The interim decisions on the proposed amendments to the Poisons Standard were published on 18 December 2025.

Overview

Scheduling amendments referred to expert advisory committee

This consultation is for applications and delegate initiated proposals to amend the Poisons Standard. The scheduling amendments and any submissions received will be considered at the MARCH 2025 meeting of the  Advisory Committee on Chemicals Scheduling (ACCS) and the joint meeting of the Advisory Committee on Medicines Scheduling (ACMS) and ACCS.

The closing date for this consultation is close of business 17 FEBRUARY 2025. All submissions received by the deadline will be considered by the delegate before they make an interim decision.

The proposals under consultation are detailed in the pre-meeting public notice of March 2025.

  • Potassium hydroxide and Sodium hydroxide

What happens next

All public submissions will be published on the TGA website at Public submissions on scheduling matters, unless marked confidential or indicated otherwise in the submission information (see Privacy and your Personal information).

Public submissions are an important part of the process for amending the Poison Standard, and are published on the TGA website using the consultation hub.  Submissions by the public may not reflect the views of the Department of Health and Aged Care or TGA.  Published submissions should not be taken as being endorsed by the Department or TGA.

Following consideration of public submissions received before the closing date and advice from the expert advisory committee/s, decisions on the proposed amendments are anticipated to be published as interim decisions on the TGA website: Scheduling delegate's interim decisions & invitations for further comment at a later date.
